“Connection” is an approximately 15x30 foot mixed-media wall installation.
This piece comprised of acrylic and latex paint, ceramic spheres, canvas, and wire.
Here, I played with the idea of creating a relief painting on a grand scale. Using the canvas not as the main backing to the piece, but instead as an element to enhance it. In this case, the gallery wall served as the true canvas. I created small ceramic spheres to assist in the “pop out” effect of the geometric circle shapes, as well as ceramic beads to assist in the Flow. Painting directly onto the wall was a must to fully engage the space for the viewer.
These pieces were created during my “On Repeat” period— A series dedicated to mark-making, repetition, with themes of minimal geometric shapes i.e. the circle or square. These works are a direct reflection of chaos and anxiety in my personal life. A ritual derived from my need for control, calm and meditation during that period.
This work took 4 days to install and was removed after 5 days of showing.
Created for the Guggenheim gallery, Chapman University, Orange California, 2010.
